Instead, the crowd did come to the rescue and the incident went viral. Examples like this are not unheard of. In August 2014, a man was freed from a train in Perth, Australia, when his leg became lodged in the gap between the carriage and platform, requiring a crowd of people to rock the carriage and free the pinned leg. Yet both examples stand in direct contrast to the tragedy of Kitty Genovese and other instances of inaction, such as the case of a Chinese toddler struck by a car in 2011, an accident that was ignored by passers-by. The evocative nature of all these occurrences (both good and bad) spurred a spate of research that got at the heart of what causes individuals to help.
